Pretty Rustic Barn Wedding Decorations

Rustic barn weddings are very popular, especially in the fall. Such a special venue calls for just the right type of decorations. They should be pretty enough for a wedding, yet casual enough to suit the location. These are some wonderful ideas for pretty rustic barn wedding decorations.

Great lighting can be one of the best ways to dress up a barn. The big open space can feel a bit dark if not properly lit. Lanterns are one of the best styles of lighting for a barn. Fill them with tall pillar candles in either ivory or your wedding colors for a great effect. Lanterns can be used as centerpieces, hung from rafters in the barn, or set out around the perimeter of the space. Another fantastic lighting idea is to hang strings of globe lights around the rafters of the barn. You can also use dozens of tiny round glass candle holders filled with votives to suspend over the dance floor. They will create a romantic flickering light that will dance on your bridal jewelry.

Seasonal Dcor

Flowers are always an important part of a wedding, and there are many varieties which are well suited to a rustic venue. Traditional flowers like roses, lilies, tulips, and orchids tend to look out of place in a barn. The best choices are casual blossoms with a country feeling, such as sunflowers, mums, dahlias, and craspedia. For an interesting kick, incorporate non-floral accents into bouquets and centerpieces. Dried seed pods, wheat, cattails, and grapevine are all great choices. Tie up bouquets with a wrap which has that same country flavor. A piece of gingham check ribbon, some raffia, or a band of slubby dupioni are some examples. As for the centerpieces, why not display them in rustic vessels? Fun ideas include oversized galvanized tin pails, watering cans, wooden boxes, or even carved out pumpkins.

If your wedding ceremony is to take place inside the barn, an aisle runner would be a nice touch. After all, when you walk down the aisle in your dream gown and special bridal jewelry, you don't want to have to worry about your train snagging on rough wooden floorboards! For an ultra-casual look, make a white canvas runner edged with burlap. You can make it unique by stenciling a design on it in your favorite colors. Or use a simple white cloth runner and dress it up with seasonal flowers in baskets placed in intervals along the way. Create little autumnal tableaux around the baskets using gourds, pumpkins, and candles in lanterns for a beautiful aisle decoration.

Wreaths always look fantastic for a barn wedding. They can be made from a number of different materials to fit in with the rustic theme. A wreath made of wheat tied with a satin ribbon creates a look of understated rustic elegance when hung on a barn door. Dried flowers make for romantic yet rustic wreaths. They would be lovely hung on the wall behind the head table. A cute idea is to suspend tiny wreaths of lavender or herbs on the backs of the bride and groom's chairs. They will smell as wonderful as they look. It is the type of little extra which will add a lot of character to your wedding reception.

A rustic barn wedding is one of the most fun to decorate. The casual and unique nature of the setting allows the bride and groom a lot of freedom to use the colors and decorations which best suit their personal taste. As long as you keep the decor relaxed, it will be perfect.

Flowers and Allergies

Flowers are beautiful. They brighten up a room and make everything in it seem more beautiful, more cheerful. For most people a vase of flowers on the table signifies that that room is a happy one, a comfortable place to be. For allergy sufferers, however, a vase of flowers is far from inviting- it's treacherous. If you're one of those unlucky people who enjoys fresh flowers but has to consider the effect they'll have on your allergies, plastic flowers are not your only option. You just have to know which types of flowers are dangerous. Of the huge variety of flowers that you can plant or buy, many types of flowers will affect your allergies very little- or even not at all.

Dangerous Flowers for Allergy Sufferers

Seasonal Dcor

Truth is, if your allergies are particularly severe, most flowers are going to affect you negatively. In general, the more dangerous flowers are the ones with more pollen. So a good guideline when decorating with flowers to avoid those ones that have visible pollen.

One type of flower that is particularly bad for allergy sufferers is tree flowers. If creating a flower arrangement, be careful not to include almond, cherry, orange, or any other kind of tree blossom. Though they are beautiful flowers, they're some of the most powerfully allergy-causing.

Lilies are some of the more dangerous flowers for allergy sufferers, as parts of them are covered in powdery orange pollen. Strangely enough, however, they can be a good choice for allergy sufferers, as it's easy to simply remove the stems of pollen from each flower. Just have a non-allergic friend or family member do this particular job, as it will probably have you sneezing in two seconds flat.

Good Flowers for Allergy Sufferers

There are several types of flowers that will affect allergy suffers less. One of these is possibly mums and daisies. While regular mums and daisies do have lots of pollen, an new hybrid type of daisy, called formal doubles, that do not have any pollen at all, and therefore won't aggravate allergies. Forma double flowers were bred so that the parts of the flower that used to produce pollen now produce petals. Watch out for regular mums and daisies, however, as they can be highly allergic. If in doubt, ask your florist.

Another great choice for the allergy sufferer is roses. Roses are some of the most beautiful and elegant flower you can find, and fortunately for allergy sufferers, they don't have much effect on allergies. The reason for this is that their pollen is too large in size to be able to become airborne and truly infiltrate the respiratory system. If in doubt, choose roses with little or no smell- the less smell, the less pollen.

Last but not least, one of the best kinds of flowers for allergy sufferers are orchids. Orchids are gorgeous and exotic flowers that come in an amazing variety of shapes and colors. Very few types of orchids cause any pollen-related allergies, and so are quite safe for those allergic to most flowers. It is important to note, though, that some orchids may cause a slight skin rash on sensitive individuals.

Seasonal Dcor

The following details will come to your assistance when you decide to buy a figurine or to start a collection of them. First of all you should be aware of the different kinds of figurines available. Any good collectible store will give you an extensive list of them.

Among the most favored brands you find Dreamsicle figurines.

All the figurines have cute noses, chubby, sparkling cheeks, caring eyes, and loving, gentle smiles. The cherubs have a variety of activities they engage in, like playing with pals and animal friends, game playing, and many others. They also depict some of the milestones within all of our lives like weddings, graduations, birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and memorable life moments as well.

Almost all of these cherub figurines wear lovely wreaths on their heads in pastel colors with the addition of ribbons and wildflowers for an even more natural look to them. The seasonal Christmas Time figures have their wreaths adorned with berries and poinsettias instead of the adornments.

There is also a "Whimsical Animals Series". There are also the "Heavenly Classics Series". There are more than 25 designs within this series now. The first introduction of the "Heavenly Classics Series" was in the year 1995. The next year the series of kids came out sporting faces that were just irresistible wearing bright and colorful designs. There are now more than 50 different types of kids on the markets today.

Over the years many older figurines get suspended or withdrawn. These pieces are now witnessing their values rise out in the collectible markets. Most of them have only a very small number of pieces and so have become very dear to the collectors.

The figurines make perfect gifts for friends and family. They will definitely add color to important days and memorials. They are just marvelous as mementos. You can think of starting a collection of these beautiful figurines. Later when you look back you will marvel at the precious moment in whose memory you bought it. How To Throw A Wine and Cheese Party

A wine and cheese party can be a great way to get together with friends or for a special bridal or wedding shower, birthday party or other celebration. It be easy to put together with a minimum of work even if you don't know much about wine or cheese! You can throw together a simple but elegant party without a lot of fuss and have an interesting theme to boot.

You can setup your room in a couple different ways which really depends on how much room you have and the shape of your room or rooms. One way is to use a long buffet table against one wall with different sections. Another is to have several "stations" around the room by using little tables each with certain wines and their complimentary cheeses. You'll want to add some other foods too as man cannot live on wine and cheese alone!

Seasonal Dcor

Decorations

A wine and cheese party should be somewhat elegant but not too gaudy. You could have simple white tablecloths with white candles. Perhaps decorating the table with grapes and grape leaves or something seasonal such as fall leaves if the party is in the fall or holly, pine boughs and ornaments if it's at the holidays. A summer party might be cute with light floral bouquets. Fruit - especially grapes go great with wine and cheese so you could have a 3 tiered centerpiece or large antique bowl filled with grapes and other fruit on the tables too. If you choose one large table a big centerpiece would be a nice focal point, you could even use and old architectural urn filled with ice and wine bottles or a large tiered platter with various tidbits on it.

You'll want to have labels for each cheese that states the name and general flavor - you can expand on that by adding the origin and maybe some history if you feel ambitious. Each section of cheese could have it's own cutting board and cutter - A cute idea would be to use the cheese boards that are made out of flattened wine bottles to cut the cheese on.

Glasses and Plates

You'll want to make sure to use the right type of wine glass with each wine. Red wine should be poured into a round ball shaped glass and white wine is more fluted but not as narrow as a champagne flute. Keep a bunch of each type of glass out so your guests can be sure to have the right glass at all times. For dishes you could get wine themed plates or go with an eclectic mix of little antique plates. Make sure you have plenty of little plates around to encourage quests to try small samples of cheese with each wine.

What To Serve

A wine and cheese party needs more than just wine and cheese! You'll also want to provide lots of interesting breads and crackers. Maybe some caviar? And don't forget dessert - a cheesecake would be in keeping with the theme but any dessert will do! And finally, some coffee might be in order after all that wine and please make sure that no one drives after having too much wine.

Of course, you'll want to make sure you serve the right wine with the right cheese and in fact complimentary wine and cheese pairings can produce interesting and unusual tastes. Half the fun of a wine and cheese party is experimenting for yourself to see what new combinations you can come up with, but heres some tips to start you off:

Wine And Cheese Party Pairing Tips

- Wines usually go well with cheese that is from the same country or region

- An acidic cheese usually goes well with acidic wines

- Roquefort goes well with Port

- Camembert, Cheddar and Brie go well with Cabernet and Champagne

- Cream Cheese and White Zinfandel make a nice pair

- Mix muenster with Beaujolais

- Colby and Gouda go good with Reisling

- Pair provolone with Chardonnay

Meaning and Origin of Christmas Gifts

Although Christmas Day is popular around the world, the pass of the time and commercial activities associated to this particular date has been diluting the meaning of the day, which was the origin of Christmas gifts as well.

Christmas is a festivity that celebrates the birth of Jesus 2006 years ago in the town of Bethlehem, about 6 miles south of Jerusalem. Although the place where Jesus was born has been subject of discussion, it is know that 3 Kings of Orient traveled to visit the newborn.

Seasonal Dcor

If the World's Finest Chocolates would have been available at this time, these three wise men would give them to Jesus as a gift but the tradition was just about to be written. Instead of Hershey chocolate or Willy Wonka Candy, the Kings honored Jesus with gold, frankincense and myrrh

As the centuries passed by, gold, frankincense and myrrh became traditional symbols to remember those early Christmas Gift to Jesus. The Three Kings of Orient, became also a symbol of kindness known by different names in different cultures and nations.

Whether you call them Kings of Orient, Three Wise Men, Kings from the East, Reyes Magos or Magi, some Christmas gifts contain some of the World's Finest Chocolates shaped with figures resembling the way they might have looked.

Hershey chocolate has special promotion during Christmas, including all sorts of chocolates wrapped in translucent lustrous paper, or other chocolates with seasonal decorations, and even small toys.

Ghirardelli chocolate also offers special boxes ideas for Christmas gifts, and many children like to collect the seasonal wrappers of some the brands for sales during the Christmas season.

The history is unclear about the name of the Wise Men, but during the 8th century, it was declared that their official names were Melchior, Caspar and Balthasar. They were formerly Zoroastrian astrologers from Ancient Persia who traveled from the east of Jerusalem to honor the King of the Jews guided by the Star of Bethlehem.

It is believed that they carried with them numerous presents. Even though, no Hershey chocolate or Ghirardelli chocolate, but three of those gifts are associated to our modern Christmas gifts.

Why were those three gifts the most meaningful? Although there are many versions of the origin and meaning of such presents, the popular theory explains that those were the common presents that a king should receive.

However, it is also believed that such gifts are associated with the prophecy of the Star of Bethlehem, which says that gold symbolized kingship on earth, frankincense was the symbol of divine authority, and myrrh symbolizing death.

What the World's Finest Chocolates means today as Christmas Gift, is a delicious experience that anyone should deserve in this season of the year.

Repairing Broken Porcelain Figurines

Porcelain figurines that are stored from previous decades now have a large value. There are many people who love collecting porcelain figurines and dolls because they find them very artistic and creative. However time after time these figurines might be a part of an unwanted accident and they can break down into pieces. Sometimes even if they don't have an accident, they might show signs of cracking because they are getting old. At these cases there are some simple steps you can complete in order to make the porcelain figurines as good as original.

You first of all need to determine how big the damage is. If we are talking about just a small chip, you can fix the figurine yourself but if it's broken into a lot of pieces then it's very advisable to send it to an expert. But nevertheless, it's your own decision and if you think you can handle it, then try to! Start by collecting all the pieces that belong to the figurine. Even the smallest pieces will give you a help so never throw them away. Then you need to find a place that has a lot of light and you might also need a magnifier if you are dealing with a small figurine. Purchase polymer glue or epoxy glue at your local store if you are dealing with chipped pieces, or if you need to fill holes or missing pieces, you can use porcelain enamel or bondo. After you purchase these products, all you need to do is put glue on the chipped pieces and hold them in their original positions for a minute, or if you are dealing with holes, apply the porcelain enamel or bondo on the holes and let them dry overnight.

Seasonal Dcor

If you think that the figurine has had severe damages, it's for the best to take it to the expert. If you try to repair it by yourself, you might end up by further damaging it and more damage is the least the figurine needs at this peak.

Birthday Party Places For Kids Of All Ages

Most birthday parties for kids are held at the kid's home. If the party is planned right, that could be lots of fun. But there are many birthday party places for kids, and some aren't all that expensive.

For example, there are many indoor family centers that offer birthday group packages. Many have miniature golf and rides, and of course games to play. I'm frankly not crazy about these places, because there could be 10 parties going on at the same time. So if you want to have your kid's birthday party at one of these places, it's best to have it in the morning.

Seasonal Dcor

I think if it were my kid though, I'd rather have a party at a place where kids birthday parties are less common. That way the kids can get more attention. The exception of course is a theme park or something, where kids can be left alone to have fun.

Amusement parks are a lot of fun, especially theme parks. These amusement places with rides are great for all ages, because at the larger parks there are rides from babies to adults. In fact, these are great places for teens; you can take them all to a theme park and buy them all tickets and pick them up later.

If you'd want your kids to learn something on their birthday, you can also take them to a museum. Some museums are dusty and dull, but the ones that are best for parties are hands-on, where kids can play with the exhibits. Some museums offer special group tours for kids too.

Many places around the US are now featuring children's museums. These places would be great for a birthday party. Some have special theme parties they can host, which include admission to the museum.

Not only museums, but aquariums, planetariums (kids love those), zoos, arboretums, even forest preserves often plan parties for birthdays. Most of these places have special shows too, like playing with dolphins or feeding the sharks.

Water parks are a another good place to spend a happy birthday. The only problem is that, unless they are indoors, they are seasonal. But water parks are lots of fun, offer numerous rides, and are generally inexpensive and clean!

Bowling alleys can be good inexpensive fun too. Generally they are not the best party places for kids under 9 though, but again many alleys offer packages for birthday parties.

One great place to spend a happy birthday is on a boat ride. They have those large boats around here that serve lunch and go on sightseeing tours. They always organize food and games for kids. And the adults don't have to worry about the kids running off, because where are they gonna go? Once again
though, unless you live in a warm state, boat rides are seasonal.

So I hope this gave you some different ideas on places to have birthday parties. Wherever you plan them, the important thing is for the kids to have fun and not be bored. Good luck!

Seasonal Flowers - Winter Flowers of South Africa

Whether you find yourself in the cold, wet Cape region with howling winds and driving rain, or in the sunny but icy Highveld, winter often creates the impression of a grey, barren time where all that is alive seeks to hide from the cold. In contrast to this, vibrant colourful flowers seem out of place and are usually not top-of-mind during these seemingly inhospitable months.

During the winter months

Seasonal Dcor

There are, however, a vast variety of winter flowers that thrive during these months and are, very possibly, the exact medicine needed to fight the blues when the skies are dull and the chilly wind cuts right to the bone. What about the special occasions that may arise during these months such as weddings, anniversaries, birthdays or simply lovely romantic gestures that can only be expressed with a bunch of gorgeous flowers?

The best part is that you do not need to weather the cold to bring a spot of warm colour into your home or office. Thanks to the existence of online flower stores, a splash or colour and floral indulgence is just a click or two away.

The options are wide and you'll be surprised to find that there are flowers to get you through winter for literally any occasion. For the more reserved and stately there are lovely lavender and dahlias - timeless classics that never go out of fashion.

If the occasion calls for something more stately, nothing says it better than stylish and elegant irises and gladioli, or, of course, the striking and sculptured strelitzia. Naturally, these remarkable flowers need not only be the basis of a so-called serious flower arrangement. You can find many fresh and innovative ways to present these beauties at your leading online florist.

The hyacinth is also a very versatile flower that can be dressed up or down, so to speak. This flower would add splendour as part of a formal arrangement or can form the focal point of a simple arrangement that makes a graceful statement.

Flowers are definitely not meant to be enjoyed only on certain occasions. This could not be truer during these harsh winter months, when a splash of colour could brighten up even the most melancholy winter afternoon. For these days a great investment would be in chirpy anemones, the famous (but never tired) daisies and joyful rununculus.

More warm, vibrant colours that would put that extra spring in your step and a smile on your face can be found in the ultra-colourful selections of calendula, the bright cheer of daffodils and, of course, in the simple beauty of fragile Iceland poppies.

Unexpected delights

Winter also offers a few unexpected and unconventional delights. Many aloes flower during this period. Although they are relatively common in South Africa, you might not be able to readily get your hands on these flowers, but if you do, they will certainly make a statement when used in a flower arrangement.

With such a wide choice of beauty, no winter's day will ever have to be dull again. Brace yourself against the cold by wrapping that blanket a bit tighter around your shoulders and chase the blues away with a few simple clicks when you buy flowers online. Without leaving the comfort of your couch you can invite a bit of cheer and sunshine into your environment.

A Great Way To Increase Footfall In A Retail Shop or Store

I've been puzzling over this conundrum for a number of years: "How do I get more people to actually come into my shop instead of just glancing in the window and walking by?" A neighbour of mine owns a shop selling perfumes and jewellery, and he came up with an interesting idea which started producing results pretty much immediately (within half an hour!).

My neighbour is called Dave. This morning he took delivery of a lot of new products, including a new range of ladies designer handbags. Dave sells everything at very low prices, but there are some items that he sells at just 50p or £1. His shop is in a small indoor shopping arcade/mall, so he has the advantage of being able to put a table outside displaying some of his goods for sale.

Seasonal Dcor

He hung up a lot of the new bags in the window - Some of these bags are very unusual and catch the eye. So already he's attracting attention not only because there are new products in the window, but also because the bags stand out over the normal run-of-the-mill products like make-up and perfume he sells. Secondly, Dave placed a sign on his table outside the shop saying "All items £1,". This referred to the items on the table only, of course.

The sign created a lot of attention, mainly because everyone loves a bargain. The items were good quality products, so people were crowding round to get a look at what they perceived to be a fantastic special offer. Next thing you know, people are coming into the shop with £1 purchases, and then looking at all the other goodies inside the shop, and usually leaving with more than they originally came in for!

It's often so difficult to get people in through the door of your shop, even if you leave the doors wide open, with huge signs flashing everywhere! I think it's because many shoppers are paranoid about entering a small shop. They feel like they are being watched, and it can be uncomfortable to shop under this imagined pressure.

Dave sold some of his new handbags today, and a lot of £1 items. I know for a fact he went home smiling this evening. It also set me off thinking about how I might apply the same techniques to entice more customers into my t-shirt printing shops. I have thought about stocking smaller items that complement t-shirts, such as pin badges (buttons), belts, wallets, sunglasses etc. I've already ordered some badges, and I'm trying to source some cheap wholesale sunglasses. I'll put them on a display stand outside the shop, with the items priced as low as possible. This should work as "bait" to make get people into the shop and hopefully taking an interest in the t-shirts that I have for sale. I'll post the results after a few weeks of testing.

Free Places to Visit in Orlando, Florida

What comes to mind when someone mentions the action-filled location of Orlando, Florida, and the surrounding areas? Do you think of having your kids meet Mickey Mouse and other Disney Characters at any Walt Disney World theme park? Do you conjure images of the themed area at Universal's Islands of Adventure, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter? Do you bring up pictures of Elmo meeting Shamu at SeaWorld Orlando?

Let's face it -- all the excitement and family fun of the theme park capital of the world is expensive. If you go to any theme park in the area, be it Epcot or SeaWorld Orlando, chances are that you'll pay for more than the admission tickets and seasonal or annual passes. You pay parking fees, meals (including many breakfasts where you take pictures of your relatives and their favorite cartoon characters), and souvenirs that are too materialistic. Water parks also work that way too: unless you stay at a resort with one, you pay for the admission and parking if it has a fee. You may be wondering if there's anything in Orlando that is completely free -- somewhere where you don't have to pay at the gate or booth. My friend, there are great places worth visits that suit your above needs.
The Epcot Resorts Area: around the borders of placid Crescent Lake lie the resorts that are just a mere walk away from Epcot, where its signature globe of Spaceship Earth can be visible without paying to actually get there. Feel free to park on any parking lot of any resort, take a stroll, and admire the beauty of each hotel. If you love free entertainment and love taking pictures, head on over to Disney's Boardwalk and watch some street performers like jugglers and clowns. I recommend that you visit during Christmas -- the decorations are worth many photo opportunities. Downtown Disney: although it's regarded as a shopping mall, with stores, restaurants, and penny rides wanting your money, it's a free attraction of its own. If window-shopping is not your cup of tea, feel free to take pictures of the window displays, store signs, and buildings. Kids will love the interactive fountain play area to cool off on a hot day and the LEGO Imagination Center if they love building their own creations with blocks. Like the Epcot Resorts Area, Downtown Disney is a free place to visit at the Walt Disney World resort -- who says that everything is not free of charge? Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe: if you are a Catholic and want to place a basilica in your vacation plans in Orlando, look no further than the eastbound edge of I-4. Just minutes away from the excitement of Walt Disney World and other Orlando area theme parks, this church is a haven for those who want peace and quiet or for those who want to commit to going to Mass if any day of their vacations falls on a Sunday. Marvel at the main church - it offers some of the best stained-glass windows that are guaranteed to dazzle you. Also, meditate in the Rosary Garden, look around in the gift shop, and take pictures of the surrounding greenery and fountains. If you either want to foster your Catholic faith or want to get away from all the hustle and bustle the Orlando area is known for free of charge, add this basilica to your vacation plans or just visit it.

Seasonal Dcor

Orlando may be expensive in so many ways: you hand out lots of money for meals, spa treatments, theme park prices, souvenirs, and much more. On the other hand, it offers places where you can just get in without paying a dime. I strongly recommend visiting those above places if you really want a change of pace from riding spinning rides, meeting crazy movie characters, and above all, spending way too much money.

House Flies - Unwanted Winter Guests

As the winter nears many insects become scarce. Adult house flies, for example, die off. Thank goodness for that I hear you say. Just remember though, that house fly eggs live on and are to be found in their larval or pupal stage hiding in some dung or in some rubbish somewhere. They may also be laid in warm attics or rafters. Flies are opportunistic and will lay their eggs anywhere that is a food source. For instance, if a mouse of bird has died in your attic, flies will use its rotting corpse as the perfect host for its young.

If the pupae or larvea were outside they would stay dormant through the cold weather. The trouble with lofts though, is that warm air tends to rise and keep them relatively warm. The eggs won't stay dormant for long. The warmth in the loft will result in continuous development until the young flies are finally hatched and, as is their nature, start to rove around looking for food.

Seasonal Dcor

They won't go far. In the winter, the only source of heat will be the house itself. They may stay trapped in the loft and might die off once all food sources have been exhausted. They may also die off if the house occupants go on vacation and turn off the heating. In many situations however, they will make their way into the living quarters of the house and start to do their nasty work of landing on and sampling various foodstuffs. The kitchen is one of their favourite destinations.

So what can be done to prevent your house (or business, hospital or school) playing host to these unwanted guests through the winter?

1. Try to plug any gaps in the roof area and other areas in the building to ensure that pests can not invade in the first place. You may consider installing Insectocutor fly screens

2. Regularly check roof spaces and other rarely habited areas for any dead creatures. For instance check rat traps and the like. Also, clear away any rubbish.

3. Make sure there are no leaks or damp areas. These can aid infestation.

4. If possible, turn off all heating for a limited period. The only practical time you may consider this is if the building is not being used for a while. If you are going on vacation this would be a good time to ensure all heating is turned off. Businesses can use the Christmas break for the same purpose. For hospitals this option will not be available of course.

5. Use fly killers. Insectocutor fly killers can be purchased from Arkay Hygiene (see below).

Cluster flies are a particular nuisance. You may need to purchase an Insectocutor SE22 or SE44 fly killer with the catch tray removed and a large metal container positioned directly underneath it (the regular catch tray would not be able to cope with the sheer numbers of cluster flies).

If you already have fly killer machines, don't forget to check them. Arkay Hygiene stock a range of spare parts including a wide uv bulb range, transformers, lamp starters and lamp holders. Don't forget that the ultra violet output of the lamps degrades after a year of recommended use. If your lamp is a year old then fit a new one.

It's bad enough being plagued by flies in the summer. Let's hope you have a rest from them this winter!

30 Ways to Display Art and Photos

It's so easy these days to simply grab a camera or cell phone and snap a picture of whatever catches your eye. You may have thousands of photos just lying around. And that doesn't count all of your other artwork like paintings and prints. So what is a person to do with all of these treasures that could never be parted with? There are many creative ways to hang and display art, and this article is full of such ideas. It will be hard to pick just a few!

The general rule of thumb for hanging objects on the wall is to hang them at eye level. They will simply be more pleasing to look at if you don't have to look way up or down to see them. If you are hanging pieces in a group, think of all of them as one big picture. In these cases it may be easier to cut out scraps of paper the same size as your art and position them on the floor before actually going for the hammer. (Incidentally, odd numbered groupings always look the best.) Another important consideration is size - make sure the scale of your art matches the size of the wall and furniture. Lastly you will want to consider lighting. While objects and pictures do not need to be spotlighted, often times the art will be even more appealing if you focus a beam of light on it. Now that we have the basics of hanging art pieces we can talk about ways to arrange them. Here are some ideas:

Seasonal Dcor

Ways to Arrange Your Art on the Wall:

1. Hang several pictures in a row, either horizontally or vertically. You could have just three or as many as you need to fill up your wall. It's a good way to keep your eyes moving around the room, too.

2. You can also offset them. Take two or more pictures and hang one. Then step the other one down by a few inches. It is sort of like hanging them on a diagonal.

3. Place four similarly shaped objects in a square to create a box shape. If you have six or more you could always do a rectangle.

4. Try placing art in a collage on your wall. Find several different objects such as paintings, photos, and architectural art and mix them up in a pleasing way. Keep them fairly close together and remember the rule of three.

5. Hang photos above a staircase. Echo the shape of your stairs by staggering the items up the wall like a set of steps.

6. Arrange your art in themes. If you have a bunch of botanicals, group them all together instead of placing them separately in different parts of your home.

Ways to Hang and Frame Your Art:

7. Frame your ordinary pictures in a unique way. For example, you could use silk flowers or evergreen garland to surround the piece. Simply glue them to the existing frame and hang.

8. Hang photos or pictures from ribbon or wire. You could even hang multiples together the same way by hanging a rod on the wall and stringing the photos from it on ribbon.

9. Arrange art around a doorway or window. Start at the bottom and go up one side, over the top, and down the other. The pieces should be small and not too busy if you do this.

10. Group pictures together in a collage or one of the other suggested shapes. Then take a piece of molding and build a frame big enough to surround the whole group and hang it on the wall around the pieces. Or you could just use paint and create a faux frame on the wall.

11. Do you have a landscape picture of the beach or countryside? Consider buying some inexpensive plastic shutters and putting them on either side of the item for a window effect.

Ways to Arrange Artwork on Furniture:

12. Look through every room in your house and see where you might be able to sit some pictures. Tops of cabinets and dressers work well, as do desks, the top of your TV, or even near the jacuzzi in the master bathroom.

13. Do you have a space between your kitchen cabinets and the ceiling? This is a perfect spot to display some small art.

14. Got a fireplace? Try putting some photos or paintings on the mantle - don't hang them above, just sit them on top. Enhance the photo with a couple of well-chosen accessories.

15. If you have a curio cabinet that is not really being used for curios, you can always put art inside instead.

16. Do you own a piano? The top of an upright, or even a grand piano, is a great place for art items.

17. If your piece of art is relatively large, try sitting it on the floor. Lean it against a wall out of the way of kids, pets, and heavy traffic and watch the smiles you are sure to get.

18. Hang up a shelf, set your pictures on top and lean them against the wall. It is a nice change from hanging them by a nail.

19. If your décor will allow, put up some chair rail picture molding. Like regular chair rails, this is installed at around three feet from the ground and is basically a very small shelf that circles your room. Lean art and photos up against the wall and let your treasures surround you.

20. If you are simply looking for a unique way to display your photos on a table, try a vignette. For example, gather three portrait photos, a couple of your favorite landscape paintings, a tall candlestick and some greenery and arrange them on the tabletop. It will make them seem more important if you group the items together.

Unique Places to Display Art:

21. Hang three or four large pictures in a square or rectangle above your bed for an instant and unique headboard.

22. If the artwork is weather-resistant or can be made to withstand the elements, try hanging a piece or two outside. The front door makes a bold statement when adorned with a favorite piece of art.

23. Do you have one of those bath and shower combos that don't quite reach to the ceiling? If you have a picture that can withstand the steam and heat of the shower (behind glass or enclosed in a metal frame for example), hang it in this blank area to add interest.

24. Another idea for those heat and steam resistant pieces is to hang them above the stove as a backsplash. Just be sure you can wipe them clean.

25. If you have one of those big sterile bathroom mirrors you can always hang a photo in front of it to make it more appealing. Take a piece that will match the décor in your bath, find a complementary ribbon, and hang it in the center of the mirror (from the wall above). This will add interest while still leaving plenty of mirror to use.

Things to Make That Will Display Your Photos:

26. Take three large pieces of wood, hinge them together accordion style, cover them with fabric, and use them as a room divider screen. Hang photos, pictures and all kinds of other art on your "new wall".

27. Using the same idea, construct a small screen for in front of your fireplace. It is a great spot to hang seasonal art for the summer when the fireplace is not in use. Just be careful to use flame retardant materials near working fireplaces.

28. Create a coffee table to display your photos. Purchase a table that fits with your décor, or use the one you already have, and get a piece of glass cut to the size of the table top. Arrange your photos on the table, then lay the glass on top for a unique, useful and waterproof art gallery.

29. If you have a picture or painting that is around 16 by 20 inches, make it into a side table. Attach the art to a piece of wood cut to the same size, then add legs you can buy at any home improvement store. Paint if you wish. Make sure you have the top covered in glass or Plexiglas, and you have an instant side table.

30. Create a shelf out of art. Take a piece of art or a special photo and get a flat frame to put it in. Nail a small piece of wood that is the same width as the frame and a couple of inches deep to the bottom. Paint it the same color as the frame, hang the photo on your wall, and you are ready to accessorize with a small bud vase, miniature collectables, or even spices in the kitchen.

Preschool Classroom Decorating Ideas

The beginning of the school year is perfect to introduce preschool classroom decorating ideas. Most children at this age are not exactly sure what to expect when they start this new adventure called Preschool.

They have some idea if they have had exposure to television, movies or children's books or even older siblings but it still has room for wonder.

Seasonal Dcor

My preference is to start a bulletin board or wall that is for and by the children. You will begin with an area marked off that will be the "creation center". You will use this creation center throughout the school year as their personal mural space. You can cover this with large butcher paper, an old sheet, cork squares...whatever you wish. Use this area throughout the year for different themes.

The most important aspect of this area is that this is their personal group display for their classroom. Children enjoy having responsibility and contributions to their class.

The first week of school is ideal to show them how you need their help in thinking of preschool classroom decorating ideas. Take a photo of each child on the first day, or have them draw a self portrait if a camera is not available. You will need to label the pictures with their names. These will be used later on.

You can suggest ideas for the board at the beginning because some children may be shy or hesitant at such an undertaking. Ask if they would like the area to have a street with a large school bus on it, or if they would like to have a playground with swing sets on it? These are just to get started. Let them know that it needs to be a setting where each child's picture can be displayed. This will help them out coming up with ideas of their own.

Next, use your week to create the idea they decide upon. If, for example, you are doing a school bus scene, you can teach them about the colors and shapes needed to create a large school bus with many windows (enough windows for each child). You can create a classroom setting with large round circles for the tables and squares for student chairs. Place a photo at each chair.

You can see that this is an area that can be used year round. The only bounds are your imagination!

I have used this area for holiday displays, seasonal displays, ocean themes, gardening themes, all about me displays and so many more.

Try these preschool classroom decorating ideas this year. Use it as a starting point for any of your preschool themes or units and you will enjoy the enthusiasm of your preschoolers and their willingness to learn and participate.

How To Cook The Best Steak In The World

Every person likes their steak cooked a different way, so throughout this article I will make sure that I cover each possible different way so that you will always get the best result for yourself or whoever you cook for.

There are several different cuts of beef that will make a great steak, and there are also many grades of beef to consider, depending on what the cow was fed on the farm, so your first step is to choose which one you would prefer. The choices include rump, scotch fillet, porterhouse, eye fillet and T-bone as the main premium cuts generally eaten. The beef's grading will come down largely to marbling and maturity of the meat. There is a debate as to which is better out of grain-fed and grass-fed cattle, and really the answer is grass-fed beef is healthier for you as it is the most natural form of the cattle, while grain-fed beef will have a lot more marbling and flavour, so I will leave that choice up to you which way you want to go. As for maturity, I recommend finding a butcher that will hang your meat for quite a long time in their meat locker before carving it, I have found that 27 days is ideal. This will help tenderize the meat by having it stretched out and relaxing the muscles, to give you the best possible final result.

Seasonal Dcor

The rump and porterhouse are firmer cuts, and the rump in particular can be a bit tougher and chewier than the rest, and you will find a strip of fat at the top of each of these steaks, which will help flavour and tenderize the steak during the cooking process. Both these cuts I would recommend eating rare to medium-rare (I will discuss steak doneness a little later).
Meanwhile the scotch fillet will come very nicely marbled with fat throughout, and can usually be distinguished by a C-shaped piece of fat close to one side. Due to the marbling it will be very tender and full of flavour (however if you're on a diet it may be one to avoid for now), and I recommend eating it medium-rare to medium.

The eye fillet is the most tender cut of beef, and will normally be free of fat, although this also means you may need to do something extra to add some flavour to it, the most popular way being to wrap bacon around it during cooking, so the fatty flavours of the bacon are absorbed by the steak. This is my personal favourite steak, and is best eaten medium-rare to medium.
Lastly we come to the T-bone, which has both the eye fillet and porterhouse on either side of the bone, and will get its flavour from the strip of fat on the outside of the porterhouse. I recommend eating the T-bone rare to medium-rare, though it can be tricky to cook evenly due to the bone in the middle.

Once you've decided which cut of steak you will be eating, you need to work out how big a piece of meat you want. A normal-sized steak is generally around 300g for a good-sized meal, however it could range anywhere from 150g up to 1kg and even more! The size of your steak will become important later when you want to cook it to a particular doneness. For example, two different rump steaks could quite easily weigh the same amount, yet be completely different shapes, sometimes they can be wide and flat, and sometimes short and thick, depending on what part of the rump the steak was cut from. Choosing the size of your steak and the shape go hand-in-hand, it's best to have a thicker steak for a rare or medium-rare steak, and when you want a medium-well or above thinner is better. This is so it doesn't take a long time for you to cook, and you can still have a juicy steak without burning the outside.

Now let's just get away from the steak for a minute and think about what you're actually going to cook it on. Ideally you should have a chargrill, one that sits on an angle, and has enough space underneath the flame to have a tray that you can put a small piece of wood on. What I personally prefer is mesquite wood, which comes from the USA, and the best thing to do is to soak it in water for a couple of hours before cooking. This will help the wood give off its smoky flavour rather than just burn away, and it will also last longer, usually for at least a couple of hours.

I mentioned earlier that if possible your grill should be built on an angle, sloping up towards the back. As you know, heat rises, so naturally you should find the hottest part of your grill at the back, and get slightly cooler closer to the front. Most grills and hotplates in general will have certain "hotspots" that you will need to find for each one to work out the bests places to position your food when cooking. Once you've used a particular grill a couple of times you should find it quite easy to figure out your favourite spots to cook on. The combination of knowing where your "hotspots" are and using an angled grill will make it easier to find the best position to cook your steak. If you don't have a chargrill to use and you have a flatgrill or a hotplate instead, I would recommend not cooking your steak entirely through on the hotplate, particularly for medium or above, seal it on both sides then place your steak on a tray and finish it off in an oven. Otherwise all you will do is burn the outside and lose all the moisture and juiciness from your meat.

The other element to consider is how you would like your steak cooked. In general, a well-done steak should be placed at the back, a medium steak in the middle of the grill, and a rare steak at the front. Obviously, this leaves medium-rare between the front and middle, and the medium-well between the middle and the back. In some situations you will need to adjust this slightly depending on the size and shape of your steak, a big, thick rump may need to be pushed a bit further up the grill to cook properly, while a thin and flat porterhouse might be best kept a little closer to the front to avoid overcooking. Your steak positioning will come down largely to personal preference and a bit of practice and experience with your grill.
Now that you should have worked out where on the grill you will place your steak, you're almost ready to start cooking! What you need to consider now is how you will season your steak. You may not want any seasoning, that's fine, go right ahead and start cooking. If you wish to use salt and pepper, I would suggest waiting until one side of your steak has been sealed before sprinkling any on, as salt has the tendency to leech out some of the moisture from your meat. My preferred method of seasoning is to get a really good steak seasoning spice and generously cover both sides before placing your steak on the grill. When you do place your steak on the grill, if you are going to have a rump or a porterhouse, make sure you place the strip of fat at the top, so as it cooks the fat will melt and drip through the steak, adding extra flavour to your meat.

The process of actually cooking your steak is quite simple, but there are a few key things you need to know to get the best result. Firstly, the advantage of using the chargrill means you can have nice cross-markings on your steak when it's finished, which looks fantastic for presentation. To achieve this, your steak will need to be turned three times, the first time straight over itself, then on the second turn spin it around 90 degrees so the lines from the grill will cross over each other and make little brown squares all over the steak, and then the third and final turn will be straight over itself again. When you're finished the steak should have cross-markings on both sides, and you can choose whichever side looks best to serve facing up.

What you should find if you have got the grill positioning right for your preferred doneness, 3-4 minutes in between each turn should have your steak turn out just the way you like it! (If you are cooking your steak bleu, you only need to cook it for 3 minutes on each side in total, just enough to seal each side basically).

This is just a guide to work by only, as each grill will produce slightly different results, but definitely the most important stage of cooking your steak is knowing when it is at the exact doneness you would like. This can sometimes be a little tricky, but there are a couple of methods for testing your steak without needing to cut into it. The best method to use when you're just starting to learn would be what I call the "thumb test". Hold your left hand out open and relaxed, and press the flesh of your left thumb with your right index finger. It should feel quite soft, and this is how a rare steak should feel when you press it with your finger.
Now lightly touch your left thumb to your left index finger, and press the flesh of your thumb with your right index finger. This is how a medium-rare steak should feel when it's ready. Next, lightly touch your left thumb to your left middle finger, and pressing the flesh of your left thumb will feel like a medium steak when it's ready.

Touching your left thumb to your left ring finger will make the flesh of your left thumb feel like a medium-well steak, and touching the left thumb to your left little finger will make the flesh of your thumb feel like a well-done steak. Try this out as a guide to get you started, and as with all things, practice and experience will help you hone your ability and instincts to know just when your steak is cooked to perfection! And just as importantly, make sure you get feedback from every person that you cook a steak for, this will make your progress go much faster. As they say, "feedback is the breakfast of champions!"

Another method to use, which can be a little bit sneaky, is if you can see into the middle of the steak at the edges to see what colour the middle looks like. This works really well for a scotch fillet, as you can gently pull away part of the meat right where the C-shaped piece of fat is without damaging your steak, and see if the inside is red, pink or grey.

Now I will explain to you each doneness, so you can work out how you would like to cook it and so you know what to look for when it is finished.
I will start with bleu, which is basically just sealed, is still very red in the middle, quite mushy to the touch, and will feel a little cool inside, only slightly warmed.

Rare is red in the middle from edge to edge, a little mushy, and will just feel warm inside. Medium-rare is red in the middle and pink at the edges, and will feel warm inside. Medium is pink in the middle from edge to edge, feels tender to the touch, and will be warm to hot inside. Medium-well still has a quarter in the middle that is pink, and will be grey at the edges, feels quite firm and is hot inside. If you plan to cook your steak medium-well or above, I would suggest you could speed up the cooking time by using a steak weight to place on top of your steak. It should be shiny silver and kept clean, and what will happen is the heat coming up from the flames below will be reflected down on to the top of the steak so it cooks on both sides. Make sure if you use a steak weight that you only place it on your steak after sealing one side so there is no chance of cross-contamination.

Well-done steaks are grey throughout, no pink at all, quite firm, although can still be juicy, and is very hot inside. Very well-done steaks are grey throughout with no pink at all, very firm, very hot, and no juices whatsoever. You can also get your steak cooked Pittsburgh, which basically means charring the outside so it is burnt while the inside doesn't need to be completely cooked. For example, if you want to have your steak Pittsburgh-Rare, you could char the outside, and the inside would be red in the middle from edge to edge. To do this you will need some oil or butter, I personally use lemon butter just for the flavouring, and drizzle some over the steak until it drips onto the flames underneath. Your goal here is to build the flames up so they are licking at the steak and will cook the outside much faster than the inside.

CAUTION! Be very mindful of how much butter you use, make sure you have fire safety equipment, and if necessary that you have adult supervision. Do not do this if you do not feel comfortable working with large flames, it can be very dangerous if something nearby catches fire, so please be very careful if this is how you would like to have your steak cooked.
Everybody has different preferences when it comes to their beef, but I would urge you to try each different way so you can work out for yourself what's best for you. Many people fear the sight of blood coming out of their steak, if you can work up the courage to try something new for yourself, who know, you might find you really like it! I personally eat my steaks medium-rare, and would like to take this opportunity to mention that once your steak starts getting to medium-well and above, you really lose a lot of the nutritional benefits of eating beef, so I would recommend not cooking your steak any more than medium, but obviously that is a choice that is entirely up to you.

Now all that's left to do is to serve up your perfectly cooked steak, there are many choices of sides and sauces, far too many to list here. I always love it with a creamy mashed potato and seasonal steamed vegetables, and my favourite sauce is mushroom sauce. If you have the time the best sauce is made using beef bones, cooked off with a little tomato paste, then make a stock by boiling the bones in water with some celery, carrots, onion, leeks, bay leaves and peppercorns. Simmer it for a couple of hours until it reduces about three-quarters, and then remove the bones and vegetables. Add some red wine and port, and reduce it down to about half of where it is now, until it starts to thicken with a nice consistency. From here you can add some sliced mushrooms, or peppercorns if you prefer, and even add a little cream if you like as well. This is very time consuming to make the jus (rich beef gravy), but if you can do it you will find it well worthwhile. One other little tip I have for you is to brush a small amount of lemon butter over your steak before saucing it, this will keep your steak very juicy and tender.

I hope you enjoy cooking and eating many steaks in the future, and make sure you go out and impress your friends with your newfound cooking skills!

Cornucopia - Meaning, History, Tips and Suggestions

A cornucopia, pronounced korn-yoo-KO-pee-uh, is a horn-shaped container. It is a time-honored symbol, long associated with Thanksgiving, that symbolizes abundance. It is also known as the "horn of plenty" and is usually filled with an assortment of the Earth's harvest.

Although it is usually a symbol of Thanksgiving, it was symbolic well before this holiday existed. The word 'cornucopia' actually dates back to the 5th century BC. It derives from two Latin words: "cornu," meaning horn (as in the name of that one-horned creature, the "unicorn") and "copia," meaning plenty.  Thus, "cornucopia" literally means horn of plenty, and the names are used interchangeably.

Seasonal Dcor

The cornucopia was usually depicted as a curved goat's horn, filled to overflowing with fruit and grain and nuts, but could actually have been filled with whatever the owner wished.

Today, the cornucopia often finds its way to the Thanksgiving table as a centerpiece. It is made like a basket and filled to overflowing with fresh flowers and fruits, nuts, and vegetables. Many people have such a basket that they bring annually to their local flower shop to be filled anew with a harvest of seasonal products.

Most florists carry cornucopias and keep them on hand during the Thanksgiving season.  A horn of plenty centerpiece looks great on a Thanksgiving table or side buffet table arranged with flowers, dried wheat, or cattails, too.  Florists can use their design skills to come up with all different types of cornucopia arrangements using lotus pods, nuts, and dried fruit.  Gourds or miniature pumpkins can be used as well.

A cornucopia is a perfect symbol of gratitude for all that we have - and all that we wish to share.

Have a wonderful holiday!

No Menstrual Period After Stopping Birth Control Pill

If you are on the birth control pill, the first step in trying to get pregnant is to stop the pill. After all, the pill works by preventing ovulation, and you need to ovulate first if you want to get pregnant.

But what's going on if you stop the pill and you don't get your period for some time? Is there something wrong?

Seasonal Dcor

Missing your period is also called amenorrhea. And the very first thing that comes to mind when you don't have your period if you could be pregnant.

Even without getting your period first there might be a chance you are pregnant. Taking a pregnancy test will pretty much tell you whether your are pregnant or not. A negative pregnancy test, especially if it's repeated over a week or so, usually means that you are not pregnant.

But is there anything wrong if your period hasn't come for 2-3 months after stopping the pill? And when should you see your doctor?

First of all let me reassure you. The sort of delay you're experiencing after going off the pill is quite common and here's what's going on:

Combined contraceptives, containing both estrogen and progesterone, are the most commonly used oral contraceptives. They prevent ovulation by maintaining certain hormone levels and suppressing other natural hormones that would otherwise stimulate the ovaries to ripen and release an egg. By taking combined oral contraceptives, you prevent an egg from developing, or being released, for that cycle.

While a woman is on the pill, the menstrual period doesn't come - as it usually does, as a result of ovulation - but because of the sudden decrease in hormone levels during the one week per month when the pills she takes are placebos, when they don't contain any hormones.

Because their cycle is controlled by the pills, women taking oral contraceptives are used to getting regular menstrual periods every 28 days.

When you stop taking the pill entirely, the constant hormone level that suppresses ovulation stops. Your body has to start its own hormone production and may sometimes need some time to regain its normal rhythm. The ovary itself has to get ready so that an egg can mature and can be released.

While there are several hundred thousand eggs in the ovaries ready to mature, they may need some time before your first new ovulation.

Your regular menstrual period is usually the result of ovulation, not the other way around.
Menstrual bleeding usually results from a decrease in natural hormone levels about 14 days after the ovulation, if you're not pregnant. The average woman takes one month to three months to start ovulating again after stopping the pill. Sometimes ovulation may occur sooner; other times, it may take longer. So the first sign that your ovulation has returned is usually the reappearance of your regular menstrual cycle, a couple of weeks after ovulation.

"Post-pill amenorrhea," the absence of a menstrual period after you stop the pill, is seen in about one in 30 women after they stop the pill. Until you start menstruating regularly, it's going to be difficult to tell exactly when you've ovulated, unless you start checking for other signs of ovulation.

To improve your chances of predicting the day of ovulation, you may want to do the following:

Use a basal body temperature thermometer and create a temperature chart Check your cervical mucus for signs of ovulation Add an ovulation-prediction kit (OPK)

You might want to have sex regularly, once a day or every other day, around the time you think you might be ovulating or when the ovulation-prediction kit shows you are about to ovulate, just to make sure you don't miss the important day of ovulation.

If your menstrual period doesn't return, or if it continues to remain very irregular for several months, that may be a sign that you haven't started ovulating regularly yet.

If your menstrual cycle has not returned by three months, or more, after you stop the pill, you probably want to see your Ob-Gyn and discuss what to do next.
